How to choose
A hip pack is about carrying just the essentials, hands free. Start with how much you carry and how you want to wear it.
Phone, keys, cards, nothing more. The Mountain Waist Pack (1L) and the Mini Quick Pack (1.7L).
Room for water, snacks and a layer on the move. The Mountain Hydro Hip Pack (4.4L).
Every pack works at the waist or slung across the chest, so you choose the look and the access.
Frequently asked questions
How do you wear a Topo Designs hip pack?
Two ways, around the waist or slung across the chest. The adjustable webbing strap lets you switch between the two, so the same pack works for the trail, the city or a festival.
What is the difference between a hip pack and a fanny pack?
They are the same thing. Hip pack, fanny pack and waist pack all describe a small bag worn on a strap around the waist or across the body. Topo Designs calls them hip packs and waist packs.
What fits in a 1 litre hip pack?
A phone, keys, wallet, cards and a few small essentials. The Mountain Waist Pack (1L) is built for a minimal, hands free carry rather than bulky items.
Which hip pack is best for hiking?
The Mountain Hydro Hip Pack (4.4L) is the trail choice, with room for water, snacks and a layer. It is made in recycled ripstop nylon for loaded, active use.
Are Topo Designs hip packs water resistant?
Yes, water resistant, not fully waterproof. The fabric and coatings shed light rain, and our finishes have been PFAS free since 2024, but for heavy rain keep electronics in a pouch.
Can a hip pack be worn as a crossbody?
Yes. Lengthen the strap and wear it across the chest or over the shoulder. It is a common way to carry a larger hip pack like the 4.4L Hydro.
What are they made of, and will they last?
Recycled nylon chosen for years of daily use. All bags are covered against defects in materials and workmanship through our MAP Guarantee, with a repairs programme to fix well loved packs.
Are hip packs allowed as a personal item on a plane?
Usually yes, a small hip pack fits within most airlines' personal item or accessory allowance, but limits vary by carrier, so check yours before you fly.
