Most are built from heavy-duty recycled nylon, often 400D or 1000D, with a 210D recycled nylon lining. Higher denier fabrics like 1000D resist abrasion on the base and high-wear panels, so a pack holds up to years of trail days and daily carry. Water resistance varies by model. The recycled nylon fabrics shed light rain and resist splashes, which handles typical trail weather, but they are water resistant rather than fully waterproof, so seams and zips are not sealed against sustained downpours. For wet day hikes, a pack rain cover or a dry bag for electronics and spare layers keeps your kit dry with very little extra weight.

Empty the pack, shake out grit, and open all pockets. Spot clean with mild soap, lukewarm water and a soft brush, paying attention to straps and the base. Air dry fully away from direct heat before storing, so damp fabric does not develop odour. Avoid machine washing and tumble drying, which can damage coatings, zips and straps and shorten the life of the pack.
