How to choose
The real decision is volume and how you carry, not whether the pack will last. Start with the size you actually carry day to day.
A laptop and a full day of essentials. The Rover Pack Classic (20L), Daypack Classic (21.6L) and Cosmos Backpack (22L) are the natural daily choices.
One bag that also handles a weekend or a flight. The Global Travel Backpack (27L) and Global Pro Backpack (24L) carry as cabin friendly packs.
Trail days or a lighter load. The Rover Trail Pack (24L) is built for the trail, the Rover Pack Mini (10L) for a compact everyday carry.
Frequently asked questions
What size backpack do I need?
For everyday carry with a laptop, around 20 to 22 litres is the sweet spot. The Rover Pack Classic (20L) and Daypack Classic (21.6L) suit daily use, while 24 to 27 litres, like the Global Travel Backpack (27L), works when one bag has to cover a weekend or a flight.
Which Topo Designs backpack is best for a laptop?
Most of our 20 litre and larger packs carry a laptop. The Rover Pack Tech (24.3L), Commuter Backpack (25L) and Daypack Classic (21.6L) are built around commuting and tech carry. Check the product page for the exact sleeve size before you buy.
What is the difference between the Rover Pack Classic and the Daypack Classic?
Both are everyday packs around 20 litres. The Rover Pack Classic is the signature top loading pack with a rugged, timeless build, while the Daypack Classic leans toward city and commute use with a more structured opening. Choose by the look and the way you like to pack.
Are Topo Designs backpacks waterproof?
They are water resistant, not fully waterproof. The fabric and finishes shed light rain, and our coatings have been PFAS free since 2024, but for heavy rain we recommend a rain cover or a dry bag inside.
Can one backpack handle both the city and travel?
Yes, that is what the range is designed for. Packs like the Global Travel Backpack (27L) and Global Pro Backpack (24L) carry as a backpack day to day and work as cabin luggage for a trip, which is the versatility Topo Designs is built on.
What are they made of, and will they last?
Most packs use recycled nylon chosen to take years of daily, loaded use. All bags are covered against defects in materials and workmanship through our MAP Guarantee, and our repairs programme is there to fix well loved packs rather than replace them.
Are these backpacks carry on friendly?
The larger travel packs are designed to work as cabin luggage. The Global Travel Backpack (27L) in particular is built for one bag travel, though cabin size limits vary by airline, so check your carrier before you fly.
Are Topo Designs backpacks suitable for school or university?
Yes. Around 20 to 25 litres carries a laptop, books and daily kit, so the Daypack Classic (21.6L) and Commuter Backpack (25L) work well for school and campus. They use the same durable build made for years of use.
